Quirky is only the beginning. This novel does not really feel like a novel. It’s more like several vignettes punctuated by a mixed bag of philosophical musings. Many references to works not generally consumed by normal people (read: not in college) are sprinkled throughout. The characters are fascinating, but the tone is dark. Or maybe dim is more accurate. But beautiful bright spots show up unexpectedly. It’s very thought-provoking, so read it with someone else. Or convince your book club to read it. (selling point: it’s short).
Bottom line: not my favorite book, but I’m glad I read it. 3 out of 5
